BYU vs. New Mexico State: Mo Moments

The New Mexico State Aggies seized the momentum early against the Brigham Young Cougars. The Aggies also gained some momentum in the second half. The rest of the game, BYU had the momentum distinctly on its side.

Mo Moment 1
After stopping New Mexico State three and out on the game’s first possession, BYU steadily moved the ball down to the New Mexico State 14-yard line. On third down, New Mexico State sacked the BYU quarterback for an 8-yard loss.

Momentum swing! The sack pushed BYU back to the 22-yard line and forced a 39-yard field goal. The Cougars missed that field goal attempt. BYU’s offense was knocked off rhythm. On the next series BYU punted after three plays. New Mexico State then took a 7-0 lead.

Mo Moment 2
Coming back after the New Mexico State score, James Lark completed a 10-yard pass on the first play of the drive, and a 23-yard pass on the third play of the drive to move BYU into New Mexico State territory at the 41-yard line.

Momentum shift! BYU finished the drive with a five-yard touchdown pass to pull within one point, 7-6 (missed PAT). The Cougar defense stopped New Mexico State three-and-out following the touchdown, and JD Falslev returned the punt 42 yards to set up another score and BYU’s first lead of the game.

Mo Moment 3
With 2:38 to play in the first half, New Mexico State had the chance to run out the clock, if not score, and go into halftime with momentum or a manageable chance to win the game. BYU forced a 3rd and 4 on the fourth play of the drive. That play finished in a 10-yard sack.

Momentum boost! The sack forced a punt and BYU got the ball back with 1:36 to play and 66 yards to go for a touchdown. Great play calling and clock management got BYU a touchdown in just 1:02 to take a 20-7 lead at halftime with touchdowns on each of its last three possessions.

Mo Moment 4
BYU continued to roll in the second half. The Cougars scored a field goal on the opening series of the second half to take a 23-7 lead. Once New Mexico State got the ball, the Aggies went to work. In four plays, New Mexico State was in the end zone after a 67-yard bomb.

Momentum shift! The score made it a single-digit game, 23-14. For all the momentum gained from scores the last four drives, New Mexico State was right back in this game. The Aggies forced a BYU punt for just the second time in the game.

Mo Moment 5
That second BYU punt was a 58-yard boot that died at the two-yard line with 7:21 to play in the third quarter.

Momentum shift! With New Mexico State backed in a hole, the Cougar defense regained the upper hand. For the rest of the game, New Mexico State netted 12 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, the BYU offense got the ball back at the New Mexico State 42-yard line and proceeded to score touchdowns on each of its next four possessions to run away with the game.
