The 1992 BYU football team started the season 5-4. The team won its final three regular season games to take an 8-4 record into the Aloha Bowl against Kansas. The Jayhawks beat BYU 23-20, and the Cougars finished the year 8-5.

BYU has started the season 5-4 ten different times. The final win-loss record for each season is as follows:

1933: 5-4 (9 game season)
1965: 6-4 (WAC Champs)
1967: 6-4
1971: 5-6
1972: 7-4
1975: 6-5
1992: 8-5 (lost bowl game)
1993: 6-6 (lost bowl game)
2004: 5-6
2005: 6-6 (lost bowl game)

Three seasons BYU won all the remaining games, but it was never more than two (1965, 1966, 1972). Twice BYU lost all the remaining games (1971, 2004).

BYU is 0-3 in bowl games after starting the season 5-4.
