Former BYU head football coach LaVell Edwards passed away on December 29, 2016. By that time, BYU had already completed its 2016 football season, so in 2017 Brigham Young Cougars football will honor the man who made BYU football what it is today by wearing a patch for the entire season.

The third and final major announcement at BYU Football Media Day was that the football program is finally retiring the number six. The number is being retired in honor of three Brigham Young Cougars: Marc Wilson, Robbie Bosco, and Luke Staley.

When BYU head coach LaVell Edwards made the commitment to throw the football, it eventually led to Brigham Young Cougars quarterbacks rewriting the NCAA record book. It reached a point where Cougar signal callers held virtually every passing record. One in particular that BYU quarterbacks dominated was the record for most passing yards in a single season.
