Like his days at BYU, Kyle Van Noy beginning to be recognized as a playmaker in the NFL

Former BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy anchored the best defense in school history in 2012. From 2011-13, he was the preeminent defensive playmaker for the Cougars. When he moved on to the NFL, it wasn't a smooth transition. However, ever since he was traded to the New England Patriots one year ago, Van Noy has resembled that athletic, dominating defensive menace.

The New England Patriots share the best record in the AFC at 6-2. At the halfway point of the regular season, Van Noy is among the team leaders in tackles (2nd, 55), sacks (T-1st, 3.5), and tackles for loss (1st, 4, no other player has more than one).

With linebacker Dont'a Hightower out for the season with injury, the Patriots are going to expect even more from Van Noy. Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick discussed Van Noy's readiness for the increased responsibility with Boston media last week.

That's not the only time Belichick has praised Van Noy in recent weeks. Just this past Monday, Belichick said, "He's been excellent," when talking about the different roles he has played for the Pats defense.

He also complimented Van Noy's instincts and football IQ after he made a great goal line play against the Atlanta Falcons this season.

Belichick isn't the only one noticing the valuable contributions Van Noy has made in New England. Pat's Pulpit assessed the trade the Patriots made for Van Noy, and concluded he was well worth the deal.

No one, including Van Noy himself will tell you he doesn't need to get better. However, the general opinion seems to be that Van Noy is capable of getting the job done in New England.

Besides being comfortable on the field, Van Noy has demonstrated a certain comfort level in the locker room and socially with this team. Following the Patriots' most recent game, Van Noy wasn't afraid to tell a reporter, in a matter-of-fact way, that he didn't like the question he was asked. He also recently enlisted his teammates to help raise money for his foundation: The Van Noy Valor Foundation. The Patriots published a story of the event and the work of the foundation on their team page.

Van Noy and the Patriots have a bye this week. Their next game is November 12 against the Denver Broncos.
