BYU Recruiting Roundup: One more decommit, one reaffirmation

How does the proverb go? A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Well, the BYU Cougars did nearly the opposite this weekend with recruiting.

Bird in the hand
Jaren Mitchell was BYU's bird in the hand. He is a wide receiver from the 2018 class. That means he could have signed his letter of intent during the early signing period last Wednesday through Friday. He didn't, and on Saturday, December 23, he tweeted he was opening his recruitment.

Mitchell is 5'9", 170 pounds and a three-star recruit by 247Sports and two star by Rivals and Scout. He trains with former BYU wide receiver Margin Hooks in Texas.

The best known offers he has from other schools are Colorado State and Utah State. That has some people speculating that the reality is BYU pulled the scholarship offer. That would be a result of the coaching changes BYU is undergoing on offense.

Mitchell originally committed on June 9, 2017. He had 69 receptions for 969 yards and 8 touchdowns as a junior. As a senior, he had 54 receptions for 771 yards and 5 TDs, as well as 21 rushes for 215 yards and 3 TDs.

Bird in the bush
Also on Saturday, Khymani Martin reaffirmed he was committed to BYU. Martin is a 2019 recruit, which makes him more like a bird in the bush.

He originally committed to BYU on April 13.

Perusing his twitter feed, there wasn't a formal announcement that he was entertaining other offers. However, there are signs that he may have been considering Florida Atlantic University (FAU) with head coach Lane Kiffen. Martin is from Fort Lauderdale. As a three-star recruit, that school makes a logical, local match for him. Texas Tech had shown some interest before his commitment to BYU.

Nevertheless, Martin has seen enough from whatever other schools he was considering. As enticing as they might have been, BYU still comes out on top. He recommitted via twitter on Saturday.

The 6'2", 180 pound speedster had 12 receptions for 415 yards as a sophomore. No junior year stats are available.

For the weekend, BYU lost the bird that was in hand, but the one in the bush is still in the bush. So it goes in the recruiting world.
