Hi, Steve, it's Ty: The phone call that should have been made this weekend

Ty Detmer, BYU Offensive Coordinator
"Hi, Steve. It's Ty.

"How has the bye week gone?"

Steve Sarkisian gives his reply.

"I don't know how much you have paid attention to BYU this season," Ty Detmer continues, "I know the NFL season demands a lot of time. Anyways, I'll get right to the point. We have the worst offense in the nation."

Detmer then expounds on the Cougars' offensive woes.

"Can you give me some advice, Steve?"

Besides both being football coaches, Detmer and Sarkisian share membership in a much smaller fraternity: the BYU Quarterback Club. While Sarkisian (1995-96) was no slouch, there is no debate Detmer (1987-91) was the better quarterback. There is also no debate, that Sarkisian is the better coach.

Sarkisian is currently the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. Through four weeks, he has the Falcons in the NFL's top ten rushing and passing offenses, and top five total offense. Granted, Sarkisian inherited a great group of players, such as quarterback Matt Ryan, wide receiver Julio Jones, and running back Devonta Freeman.

Sarkisian has tons of college coaching experience, too. He worked seven years at USC under Pete Carroll, and six years as a head coach at Washington and USC. Sarkisian spent 2016 on the staff at Alabama. He has had success at every stop, especially success on offense. Sarkisian has coached against all levels of competition using a pro-style offense. The same offense that Detmer wants to use at BYU.

Detmer has tons of NFL experience as a player. He is naturally gifted at reading defenses, but neither of these is translating into a robust offense under his direction as offensive coordinator.

Surely, Sarkisian has some wisdom that could help Detmer.

One key topic of conversation should have been how Sarkisian was going to adjust to the Falcons losing its top two wide receivers. Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu are both out with injuries. BYU has been battling through injuries at quarterback, and dealing with inexperience at wide receiver.

Networking is very, very important in the coaching profession. Detmer is still new to the college ranks, however, his connection with Sarkisian as former BYU quarterbacks gives him a great resource to help turn around BYU's troubled offense.

Another great coaching connection Detmer has by association with BYU is Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid. Reid is another former Cougar. He has been a successful NFL head coach since 1999. He has the tenth most wins in NFL history, and will probably move up to number nine before the end of this season.

Reid has turned Alex Smith from a bust to a bonafide NFL quarterback. Year in, year out Reid fields an efficient offense. He is one of the most respected coaches in the game.

The Chiefs have a bye November 12. Maybe he's willing to come to Provo and observe for a few days.

If it hasn't happened yet, pick up the phone, Ty. Take advantage of these fellow Cougars.
