BYU Football: Did you know? (Two QBs Passing For 300 Yards)

When Brigham Young Cougars quarterback Riley Nelson passed for 363 yards against Hawaii, he became the second BYU quarterback to eclipse 300 yards passing in a single game this year.

Did you know the last time BYU had 2 quarterbacks pass for over 300 yards in a single game in the same season was 2006?
John Beck passed for 436 yards (38 of 59) on September 16, 2006, in a game against Boston College. The next week Jason Beck passed for 305 yards (20 of 28) one week later, September 23, in a game against Utah State.

This year, Jake Heaps passed for 305 yards (27 of 50) on September 17 against the Utah Utes. As noted, Nelson passed for 363 yards (25 of 37) on December 3.

At first thought, the idea of two quarterbacks reaching the 300 yard milestone in the same season sounds rare, but it happens more often than one would expect.

2002
Bret Engemann passed for 386 yards (35 of 54) in the season opener against Syracuse. Nine games later, Matt Berry passed for 360 yards (31 of 45) against Wyoming.

2000
A trio of Cougar QBs passed for 300 yards in a game:
  • Bret Engemann passed for 447 yards (34 of 41) at Virginia;
  • Charlie Peterson passed for 324 yards (24 of 37) against Utah State; and
  • Brandon Doman passed for 349 yards (21 of 35) against New Mexico.
1992
John Walsh passed for 302 yards (17 of 28) in the season opener against UTEP. Ryan Hancock passed for 383 yards (20 of 35) in game four at Hawaii.

That makes five times in the last 20 seasons, or 25% of the time.
