BYU Football: Did you know? (Hawaiian Statistical Leader)

The Brigham Young Cougars take a trip to Hawaii this week to play the Hawaii Warriors. The state of Hawaii is the place many BYU football stars called home before coming to Provo.

Did you know that four native Hawaiians are currently in the BYU all-time top 10 in 17 different statistical categories?
Running back Lakei Heimuli from Laie, HI, played at BYU from 1983-1986. Even 25 years later, he still ranks as follows in the BYU record books:
  1. Fourth all-time career rushing yards (2,710);
  2. Sixth most 100-yard rushing games in a career (9);
  3. Fifth and seventh most rushing attempts in a game (34 vs. Hawaii, 11/8/86, 33 vs. Utah 11/22/86);
  4. Fifth most rushing attempts in a season (230 in 1986);
  5. Fourth most rushing attempts in a career (605);
  6. Second most rushing touchdowns in a season (14 in 1985);
  7. Fifth most rushing touchdowns in a career (30);
  8. Fourth most receptions in a game (13 vs. Colorado State, 10/5/85);
  9. Tenth most receptions in a season (66 in 1985);
  10. Fourth most all-purpose yards in a career (3.833);
  11. Fifth most touchdowns scored in a career (32--30 run, 2 pass);
  12. Ninth most points scored in a career (192).
Tight end Itula Mili, also from Laie, HI, played at BYU in 1991 and 1994-96. Fifteen years later, he still has the fourth most receiving yards in a career by a tight end (1,763).

Defensive lineman Brad Anae, Laie, HI, played from 1979-81. His 21 career sacks ranks tenth most by a BYU player in his career.

Homer Jones, Honolulu, HI, was on the Cougars roster from 1979-80. For his achievements over those two years, Jones ranks as follows:
  1. Tenth most kickoff return yards in a career (865);
  2. Eighth most kickoff return yards in a season (579 in 1979);
  3. Fourth highest kickoff return average in a career (24.71).
