Former
Brigham Young Cougars tight end Dennis Pitta is a Super Bowl champion. The Baltimore Ravens tight end helped his team to a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.
Dennis Pitta, Baltimore Ravens, Tight End
Pitta didn't put up huge numbers in the Super Bowl, but he was a key cog for the Ravens offense that dominated the first half. With just over seven minutes to play in the second quarter, Pitta made the biggest catch of his career--a 1-yard touchdown that put the Ravens up 14-3. The Ravens had controlled the game, and now the score board was starting to show it. On half of his receptions, Pitta did his damage after the catch with 16 yards after the catch. His final reception in the game came late in the third quarter and helped the Ravens get into field goal range to push their lead back to eight, 31-23, after the 49ers had come back from a 28-6 deficit.
The only bad play that Pitta had was a dropped pass on 3rd and 2 with about 4:30 to play and the Ravens leading 31-29. The pass was low, but it was the same type of play that he made many times while at BYU. Fortunately, the Ravens were in field goal range, and extended its lead to 34-29. The drop almost proved very costly as the 49ers drove to the Ravens 5-yard line and would have taken the lead with less than two minutes to play if they could have scored a touchdown.
