BYU Football: Did you know? (Season Openers vs. Pac-12 Schools)

In just four short weeks, the Brigham Young Cougars will kickoff the 2012 season against the Washington State Cougars of the Pac-12 Conference. It will be the first time these two schools have met in a season opener, but not the first time that BYU has kicked off the season against a school from the Pac-12 .
Did you know that this will be the eighth time BYU has played a Pac-12 member in the season opener?
BYU is 4-3 in these games dating back to 1964. At home, BYU is 3-1. Under Bronco Mendenhall, BYU is 2-1.

1964—at Oregon, L, 20-13
1978—at Oregon State, W, 10-6
1997—Washington, L, 42-20
1999—Washington, W, 35-28
2006—at Arizona, L, 16-13
2007—Arizona, W, 20-7
2010—Washington, W, 23-17

Washington State will be the fifth different Pac-12 school.

The 1999 game against Washington was the only one played on Thursday, like the Washington State game will be.

NOTE: Season opening games played against Arizona and Arizona State prior to 1978 were not included, since those schools were not yet members of the Pac Conference.

  1. BYU is 11-5 vs PAC opponents during the Bronco Mendenhall era, including their record in all games vs UTAH.

11-6 is fairly impressive, not great but represents a .647 W/L%.

Utah is 7-8 during the same time frame (Whittingham Era)including their 4-5 record to kick off last season in the PAC-12. That isn't bad either, but UTAH has played better vs OTHER BCS conference schools than it has vs PAC members.
