While the rest of America is waiting until Monday, July 4th to celebrate independence, Cougar Nation is celebrating today.
The Brigham Young Cougars football team is officially a college football independent. Thank you to everyone in the old Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference for the competition and association the last several decades. However, the time has finally come when BYU is ready, and best served, to stand on its own. Best wishes to you.
BYU now embarks on a new journey in uncharted waters. Like the Mormon Pioneers of the 19th century, the way is unknown, but the course is clear. BYU football must set out on its own to reach its full potential. Those at the top have a vision of the fruits that independence can bear. Now, the current coaches, players, and fans must put their shoulders to the wheel to raise BYU football to new heights, and wield its influence to advance the cause of all good things.
Unlike the pioneers, who had practically zero outside help to furnish their own wagons and supplies as they blazed a new trail alone, BYU football is holding hands with ESPN and has BYU-TV at its disposal. The world wide leader in sports and BYU-TV will carry BYU football games to the four corners of the United States, and to the four corners of the world. This journey will be documented for all to see. The BYU brand is poised to become the most popular college football brand in the world.
Failure is not an option. BYU football must carry on, carry on, carry on until they reach the promised land. No toil nor labor fear, independence can be a great success. The prelude to independence these last 10 months has been great. Now, it needs to start off on the right foot, and preferably accompanied with a bang.
Decades from now, may the posterity of Cougar Nation look back on July 1, 2011, and say this was the day that changed everything. This was the day that BYU football was cut out of the Mountain West’s hands and rolled forth to fill the whole earth.

Rise and shout, the Cougars are out,
Along the trail to fame and glory.
Rise and shout, our cheers will ring out,
As we unfold our INDEPENDENT story.
Go Cougars!
