The Brigham Young Cougars 2011 football season is destined to have a special place in history. After all, it is the first year of independence. Five years ago, the 2006 Cougars earned a special spot in history as well.
Going into the 2006 season, everyone associated with BYU Cougars football was ready for a change. It was time for a breakthrough season. Four consecutive seasons with a 0.500 record or worse had everyone fed up. This was not BYU football.
The season opened with two close losses in the first three games. Opportunities for a breakthrough win at Arizona and at nationally ranked Boston College were missed. A third opportunity presented itself in week five when BYU went to Ft. Worth, Texas, to face 15th ranked TCU.
The Horned Frogs were the reigning Mountain West Conference Champions, and were the owners of the nation’s longest winning streak. That night, BYU got the breakthrough it needed. Breakthrough is probably an understatement. BYU was a brick that obliterated a glass window. The Cougars controlled the game from start to finish. John Beck turned in a gusty performance playing hurt. Inspired by Beck and the offense, the defense made plays when they counted. Together, the offensive and defensive effort resulted in a 10-0 lead five minutes into the second quarter. BYU extended that lead to 21 points, 31-10, mid-way through the fourth quarter. Final score: BYU 31, TCU 17.
BYU football was back on top!
Back at the top of the MWC standings—a perfect 8-0.
