BYU Media Day: Fan Q&A With Former Players

Fans were allowed to submit questions via Facebook to Ty Detmer and Bryan Kehl. I always love hearing what former players have to say about their experiences and what they think about current events. Here are the high points.

Ty Detmer
The first several questions were not very enlightening. They were all the same questions I asked Ty in my interview with him.

Nate Meikle borrowed Ty’s cleats on his first day (Meikle didn't recognize Detmer, and thought he was one of the equipment managers).

He learned that if you speak the same “language” as Wyoming fans, then they will be nice to you. Once he started to talk hunting with them they stopped heckling him and started to be nice.

He would like to see BYU play the following teams: Arizona State (renew that old rivalry), the military academies, teams back east that they have played before (Penn State, Notre Dame).

People in Texas don’t think that BYU is too crazy for going independent

Admission to the St. Andrew’s (the team Ty coaches) football game September 9 is free. After the game Ty will be accessible and available for those who want to meet him and talk with him.

Ross Apo’s high school is in the same conference of private schools as St. Andrew’s.

If BYU beats Texas he will definitely get one of the new BYU Texas license plates.

Bryan Kehl
He wants BYU to play more Big XII and SEC teams. He wants BYU to play the best. You have to play the best and beat the best to be the best.

There is definitely a brotherhood between former BYU players. He points out BYU guys when watching game film with his NFL teammates. Austin Collie called Kehl to pick his brain about the New York Giants defense after the Giants released him.

He hasn’t talked to Collie for a while, but others are telling him that Collie has recovered from the concussions and is ready to play. Collie would have been a Pro Bowler last year if not for the injuries.

His favorite BYU memory was the 2007 Utah game (final home game). He called out Max Hall and the offense for playing terrible that game. He thought the game was over when Utah went up 10-9, but we all know what happened (4th and 18, Unga bowling into the end zone). The fans rushed the field.
