Can Fred Warner get a hat trick of pick sixes against Boise State?

Fred Warner is the leader of the BYU Cougars defense. He has earned that role through big play after big play on the field over his career. He led the team in tackles last year. Not only does Warner have a nose for the ball, he has a knack for making an impact.

He was tied for the team lead in 2016 with 10.5 tackles for loss (TFL). It was his second consecutive season with double-digit TFL. In his career, he has made 6.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, and recovered five others. Warner has broken up 10 passes and intercepted six others.

No opponent is more familiar with Warner's pass coverage capabilities than Boise State. His only interception as a freshman came against the Broncos. He made a great read, an even better break on the ball, and picked off a swing pass in the backfield. With nothing but blue turf in front of him, he raced 20 yards for a touchdown.

On a return trip to Boise last year, Warner returned another interception for a touchdown. The degree of difficulty was much higher this time.

That leads to the question: Can Warner do it again this Friday?

BYU has returned four interceptions for touchdowns in the last three games with Boise State. Dayan Lake had one last year, and Kai Nacua did the honors in 2015 (incidentally, both players' returns were 50 yards). While an interception return for a touchdown is pretty rare, there has been something about Boise State that brings it out of BYU defenders.

It would be quite the (hat) trick for Warner to pull it off again. However, both Troy and Washington State have returned interceptions for touchdowns against Boise State this year. Warner is playing great through the first five games this season, so it probably isn't wise to rule out anything.
