BYU vs. San Jose State: Game Changing Plays

The BYU Cougars controlled the game against the San Jose State Spartans, pretty much from start to finish. As such, there were only two game changing plays.

1. Butch Pau'u roughing the passer penalty (8:11, 1st Quarter)

BYU was leading 14-0, but San Jose State had just intercepted a pass right at midfield. On first down, Dayan Ghanwoloku intercepted the ball to get it back for BYU. He also returned it deep into San Jose State territory.

BYU was all set to go up 21-0, but the play was negated by a roughing the passer penalty. Pau'u arrived just barely late enough for the officials to throw the flag.

That allowed the Spartans to get on the board by kicking a field goal with 6:18 left in the first quarter. BYU then had to drive the length of the field. That drive stalled at the San Jose State 15, and ended with a missed field goal. The Spartans followed that with another field goal to make it a one score game, 14-6, with 10:45 to play before halftime.

2. KJ Hall 75-yard touchdown run (10:27, 2nd Quarter)

BYU had not scored on its last two possessions, while the Spartans had. On 2nd and 10, Hall squirt through a hole on the left side of the line, and found nothing but green grass all the way to the end zone.

That gave BYU a 21-6 lead, and command of the game, again. The BYU defense forced turnovers on San Jose State's next two possessions. BYU added a field goal before the half, and the Spartans didn't score again until 7:24 was left in the game.
