BYU Football: Did you know? (Diverse Scoring)

The Brigham Young Cougars aren’t exactly lighting up the score board in 2011. However, the whole team has gotten into the act, and the BYU scoring has been very diverse.
Did you know that, in 2011, BYU has scored points 10 different ways?
Those 10 different ways are as follows (when it happened for the first time is in parenthesis):
  • 1 Point-After-Touchdown (Justin Sorensen vs. Ole Miss, 9:52 4th Quarter )
  • 2 Point-After-Touchdown (Riley Nelson vs. TCU, 2:01 4th Quarter)
  • Safety (San Jose State, 9:09 1st Quarter)
  • Field Goal (Justin Sorensen 30 yards vs. Texas, 9:33 1st Quarter)
  • Touchdown Pass (Jake Heaps to Ross Apo 19 yards vs. Ole Miss, 9:52 4th Quarter)
  • Touchdown Run (J.J. Di Luigi 16 yards vs. UCF, 8:13 3rd Quarter)
  • Touchdown, Fumble Return (Kyle Van Noy 3 yards vs. Ole Miss, 5:09 4th Quarter)
  • Touchdown, Interception Return (Daniel Sorensen 30 yards vs. Idaho State, 2:26 3rd Quarter)
  • Touchdown, Kickoff Return (Cody Hoffman 93 yards vs. UCF, 4:37 3rd Quarter)
  • Touchdown, Punt Return (JD Falslev 67 yards vs. TCU, 2:20 3rd Quarter)
The only other ways to score would be to return a field goal for a touchdown and to score a two point-after-touchdown conversion with a pass.

There is only one time I know of that BYU has returned a blocked or missed field goal for a touchdown. That was done by Ryan Denney (82 yards) against San Diego State in 2001.

The last time a BYU team has scored in all 10 of the ways that the 2011 Cougars have was the 1996 season. BYU scored both 1 and 2 point conversions, and a passing touchdown in game one against Texas A&M. BYU scored a field goal and rushing touchdown against Arkansas State in game two. The punt and fumble return TDs came against Utah State (game 6). The interception and kickoff return came in the same game, too (UTEP, game 10). BYU scored two safeties in 1996—the WAC Championship game vs. Wyoming, and the Cotton Bowl vs. Kansas State.

  1. Well, technically, you could run a blocked extra point try back for a conversion or run an interception back for a conversion on a two point try.
