BYU in NFL, Week 13: Jamaal Williams carries the Packers to victory, Taysom Hill shines in first NFL action
Photo credit: Steve Apps, The State Journal |
Week 13 was not unlucky for former BYU Cougars in the NFL, in fact, it was probably the best week to date.
Jamaal Williams continues to improve and was the focal point of the Packer's offense. Taysom Hill hijacked the headlines with his special teams play. Both rookies were trending on Twitter during the day.
Kyle Van Noy left the field with an injury, again. Daniel Sorensen had a career best in a loss.
Two other rookies on different teams made tackles on back-to-back plays in the same game.
Here is a complete rundown of former Cougars in the NFL for week thirteen.
Ezekiel Ansah, Detroit Lions (6-6, L 44-20 Baltimore Ravens)
Ansah was second on the team with five tackles. He was injured midway through the third quarter, but did return to the game. Overall, Ziggy got in on 31 defensive plays (48%).

John Denney, Miami Dolphins (5-7, W 35-9 Denver Broncos)
Denney was busy this week. He snapped for nine punts, four extra points, and one field goal. Those 14 plays were 41 percent of all Dolphins special teams plays.
Daniel Sorensen, Kansas City Chiefs (6-6, L 38-31 New York Jets)
Sorensen had a game high 11 tackles. That is also a career high for Sorensen, and his first double-digit tackle game. The problem is a safety shouldn't be making that many tackles if you want a chance to win. He also had a roughing the passer penalty that helped move the Jets into field goal range. Sorensen was a work horse playing 89 defensive snaps (98%) and nine special teams snaps (28%).

Kyle Van Noy, New England Patriots (10-2, W 23-3 Buffalo Bills)
Van Noy had three tackles, half a sack, and one pass defensed. He was injured, again, when he made the sack. It doesn't seem too serious, but the Patriots might want to have him sit out next week. Van Noy saw limited action this week playing just 15 defensive snaps (22%) and two special teams plays (10%).
KVN gets half a sack, but it comes at a price. Got hurt making a sack last week too. https://t.co/WAs6FHI3wY— Blue Cougar Football (@BlueCougarFball) December 3, 2017

Jamaal Williams, Green Bay Packers (6-6, W 26-20 OT Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
Williams keeps getting better. He got his first 100-yard rushing game, and played a big role in the overtime victory. On the touchdown drive in overtime, Williams had three carries for 15 yards and caught one pass for 12. He had a hard fought touchdown run early in the game (see video below). He had three runs and one catch for first downs, and several eight and nine yard runs on first down. Williams had his longest run of the season, 25 yards. He played a total of 48 offensive snaps (87%).
It was just the second time, ever, that a former BYU running back had 100 yards rushing in a game (Eric Lane had 113 yards on September 30, 1984, per @CougarStats).
