Brigham Young Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced that senior linebacker Jordan Pendleton is out for the season with a new knee injury that he suffered against TCU on October 28, 2011.
Pendleton’s season ended early in 2010 as well with a knee sprain in game five against Utah State. Mendenhall explained that the current injury that Pendleton has is different than the injury a year ago, however, this new injury is common among players who have undergone the procedure Pendleton did a year ago.
Mendenhall further explained that the team was unable to pinpoint what play Pendleton injured his knee in the TCU game. Pendleton discovered soreness in his knee the day following the game. The team is currently researching the best procedure for Pendleton.
Mendenhall noted he would keep Pendleton integrated with the team as much as possible. He explained that this could even mean that Pendleton would provide coaching at the Sam Linebacker position.
With regards to Pendleton’s football future, he has played his last down in Cougar blue. However, Mendenhall said Pendleton should still have a professional career in the NFL.
In Pendleton’s absence, Jameson Frazier will be the starting Sam linebacker and Alani Fua will be the back up. Mendenhall pointed out that Will linebacker Kyle Van Noy can also play the Sam position, if necessary, and Jadon Wagner would play Will if Van Noy was moved to the Sam spot.
When asked to characterize Pendleton’s career at BYU, Mendenhall described the South Jordan native and Bingham High product’s playing days as "difficult" and said Pendleton had a lot of determination. His sophomore season (2009) was the height of his health and production. Mendenhall said Pendleton was instrumental in BYU playing good football the past three seasons, and that Pendleton has learned a lot along the way.
In seven games this year, Pendleton made 32 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 4 sacks, with 1 pass break up and 2 quarterback hurries.

Wow...that is heartbreaking news. Pendleton has been my favorite on the defensive side of the ball (for obvious reasons...well, obvious to those who know I am Bingham High grad). He had a lot of potential, and was really starting to get back to the kind of play they made us all so excited his sophomore year. Really too bad. I hope he can recover and have a chance to play in the NFL.
