BYU Football: Did you know? (Family Ties)

The BYU Football: Did you know? for this week is a little random, but something I have wanted to take a closer look at for awhile. With this being a bye week, it seemed a good time to fit it in.
Did you know that 27 players on the current BYU roster have close family ties to other BYU football players?
Four of these players are sons of former players.

Famika Anae—Robert Anae, 1980-84
Dallin Cutler--Chuck Cutler, 1985-88
Jameson Frazier—Danny Frazier, 1978-79

Eight of these players have brothers who played for BYU

Spencer Hafoka—Saia Hafoka, 2004-07
Braden Hansen—Brock Hansen, 2005-06
Alex Kuresa—Jake Kuresa, 2002-06

There are four pairs of siblings currently on the team.

Then, there are the Reynolds brothers. They fall into all three categories.

Houston Reynolds—Father played for BYU (Lance Reynolds, 1973, 1976-77); Two brothers played for BYU (Lance Reynolds, 2001-05; Dallas Reynolds, 2005-08); One brother currently plays for BYU (Matt Reynolds, 2007-11)

Matt Reynolds—Father played for BYU (Lance Reynolds, 1973, 1976-77); Two brothers played for BYU (Lance Reynolds, 2001-05; Dallas Reynolds, 2005-08); One brother currently plays for BYU (Houston Reynolds, 2009-Present)

There are two groups of cousins.

Daniel Sorensen and Justin Sorensen
Spencer Hadley, Austen and Colby Jorgensen

Current player Joe Sampson and former player Ryan Mulitalo (2009) are cousins.

Matthew Edwards is the grandson of former head coach LaVell Edwards.

While we are on the topic, it should be pointed out that head coach Bronco Mendenhall is the son of former BYU player Paul Mendenhall (1953-54), and the brother of Mat Mendenhall (1975-79). Bronco is also Zed Mendenhall's uncle.

Additionally, four recruits from the 2011 class who have yet to enroll at BYU have family ties with BYU football players.

Corey Edwards—Father played for BYU
Corbin Kaufusi—Father played for BYU (Steve Kaufusi, 1985-87)
Ului Lapuaho—Father played for BYU (Rob Lapuaho, 1985, 1989)
Aulelio Olomua—Brother played for BYU (Bristol Olomua, 1999, 2002-03), and current Cougar Famika Anae is his cousin.

  1. Daniel Sorensen's grandfather, Stanley Gleave, played basketball for BYU in the earley 5's.

  2. Thanks for sharing.

It would take a lot of time, and the proper resources, but it would be interesting to see how family ties stretch across all BYU sports.

  5. Wow, the 2011 BYU Football Prospectus failed me on the other Brown brothers

As for Zed, that was my Gov. Perry moment.

    Thanks for the help.
