Indisputable: BYU's Fred Warner one of the top LBs in NFL Draft

Several NFL Draft Analysts and Scouts singled out Fred Warner for his on field abilities after the Senior Bowl in January. The former BYU Cougars standout linebacker had a fantastic showing at the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend getting official times and measurements in key football drills. Thus, it is now official: Fred Warner is one of the best linebackers in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Warner was listed as a top performer (top 15) for every single test ran at the combine. More often than not, he was in the top 10.
  • Bench Press, 225 lbs.: 21 reps (T-8)
  • 40-Yard Dash: 4.64 (13)
  • Vertical Jump: 38.5" (T-4)
  • Broad Jump: 9'11" (T-9)
  • Three Cone Drill: 6.9 seconds (T-6)
  • Twenty-Yard Shuttle: 4.28 seconds (T-9)
  • Sixty-Yard Shuttle: 11.77 seconds (4)
Note: Only four linebackers opted to run the sixty-yard shuttle. The fastest time was 11.52.

To help put that performance into perspective, here is Warner's Relative Athletic Score (RAS).

The RAS takes "player measurements and put them on an easy to understand 0 to 10 scale compared to their position group. A final score is then produced which is also on a 0 to 10 score to show overall athleticism for a draft prospect. The data can be used to chart trends over time, showing that overall athleticism is likely a contributing factor to player success in the NFL" (https://relativepositionscores.com). By comparison, BYU's Bryan Kehl received a 9.66 in 2008.

Warner's marks and performance in the other drills caught a lot of people's eye. Here are some of the comments from the pundits and analysts.

Fellow BYU alum Kyle Van Noy helped convince Warner to come to BYU and has mentored him over the years. Van Noy sent out this tweet yesterday.

Here is video of Warner's first 40-yard dash.

And here is some additional footage of Warner running drills.

Warner is building up quite a fan club. He has fans from several franchises making their wishes known that they want Warner as part of the club, including the Super Bowl Champion Eagles, Steelers, Packers, Falcons, Patriots, Bears, Saints, Raiders, and Seahawks.

Warner has the option of running these drills again during BYU's pro day, but it is probable he will not.
