Thursday Trivia: Most Rushing Yards By A BYU Quarterback

The correct answer to the last trivia question "How many different BYU players currently hold one or more NCAA records?" is 20. Collectively, they hold 31 records. These players were quarterbacks, tight ends, running backs, wide receivers, kick returners, punt returners, place kickers, and punters. The players and the number of records they each hold is:

  • Ty Detmer, 7 records
  • Steve Young, 1
  • Steve Sarkisian, 1
  • Jim McMahon, 1
  • John Walsh, 2
  • Gordon Hudson, 3
  • Clay Brown, 1
  • Dennis Pitta, 2 (one is shared with Austin Collie)
  • Chris Smith, 1 (shared with Andy Boyce)
  • Curtis Brown, 1
  • Dick Felt, 1
  • Austin Collie, 3 (one is shared with Dennis Pitta)
  • Andy Boyce, 1 (shared with Chris Smith)
  • Stacey Corley, 1
  • Paul Allen, 1
  • Golden Richards, 1
  • Vai Sikahema, 1
  • Joe Liljenquist, 1
  • Matt Payne, 2
  • Lee Johnson, 1
Missing from this list is Gary Sheide. The NCAA keep a record for “Touchdown Pass Thrown on First Pass of Career.” Sheide has been left off the list, but his first career pass was a 68 yard touchdown against Oregon State in 1973. Seven other players have done this, but Sheide would have the longest touchdown pass of them all. The next closest is 42 yards.

On to this week's question. Brandon Doman finished the 2001 season with 456 yards rushing. That is the second most rushing yards in a season by a BYU quarterback. Therefore, this week’s trivia question asks:
Who is the BYU quarterback with the most rushing yards in one season?
