First, I have to credit Phil Steele with the assist this week. These numbers come from his College Football preseason magazine.
After the ugly 2017 season, everyone is looking for signs that the BYU Cougars will be better this year. One good sign is the number of returning starters on offense and defense.
Did you know that in the last seven years when BYU returns more than six starters on offense it averages more than 30 points scored per game, and when returning more than six starters on defense it averages less than 20 points allowed per game?By Phil Steele's count, the Cougars return seven starters on each side of the ball in 2018.
In the last seven seasons, there have been three seasons when BYU returned more than six starters on offense.
- 2011: 9 starters, 30.1 points per game
- 2013: 8 starters, 30.2 points per game
- 2014: 8 starters, 37.1 points per game
As for the defensive side, there have been only two seasons BYU has had more than six returning starters.
- 2012: 7 starters, 14.0 points per game
- 2016: 8 starters, 19.5 points per game
The average win total for BYU in these five seasons was 8.6 (43 total wins).
