Ty Detmer is no longer BYU's offensive coordinator

BYU Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake just announced that Ty Detmer will not be the offensive coordinator in 2018. The BYU offense was one of the worst in the nation, and failed to meet the standards of a school that was built on explosive offense.

Detmer played at BYU from 1987-91. He broke scores of school and NCAA records. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1990. He returned to the Y in 2016 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. With future NFL talents Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams in 2016, Detmer was able to lead an offense that was good enough to win nine games. Without them this year, the Cougar offense was one of the worst in the nation.

BYU Offense 2017 (National Rank)

Scoring: 17.1 points per game (124)
Rushing: 130.5 yards per game (105)
Passing: 194.6 yards per game (91)
Total Offense: 325.2 yards per game (119)
First Downs: 16.5 per game (121)
3rd Down Conversion: 35.75% (97)
4th Down Conversion: 30.77% (122)
Red Zone Conversion
     All Scores: 73.68% (120)
     Touchdowns: 44.74% (127)
Time of Possession: 27:53 (109)

The very brief press release does say that all offensive coaches are still under contract, including Detmer. That means Detmer still retains his title as the quarterback coach. BYU is looking for only a new offensive coordinator.
