Excitement level for 2018 season unchanged after BYU Football Media Day

After sending out the public service announcement right before BYU Football Media Day calling it a "pep rally to get people excited," Blue Cougar Football wanted to take the temperature of the fan base and see if media day achieved that purpose.

Without any detailed, big announcement about the program (the stadium wi-fi and the new app don't qualify as program related announcements), BYU Football Media Day appears to have failed in exciting fans. Poll results to the question, "How did BYU Media Day affect your outlook on the 2018 season?" indicate more than two-thirds of respondents experienced no change in their excitement level.
Official Result
68% No change
29% More excited
3% Less excited
The good news is only three percent of respondents are less excited.

The fact that 68 percent responded "no change" probably has a lot to do with the 2017 results. Many fans are still licking their wounds from the 4-9 record. Since there was no breaking news, nothing has changed to generate excitement. A starting quarterback has not been named. The entire offensive scheme is still ambiguous. No new names have been added to the team, offense or defense, that are "guaranteed" to be a difference maker. There were a lot of coaching changes, but that is old news.

It is possible to be more excited, but still maintain the same expectations. That describes me.

Let's face it, some people are just football junkies. Anything that gives the feeling that football is coming gets these people excited. Hearing head coach Kalani Sitake, his assistants, players, and Cougars in the NFL talk gets my heart to beat a little faster. The blood is flowing. Football is exciting!

Yes, I'm excited to see who the starting quarterback is and how well he plays. Yes, I'm excited to see how Sione Takitaki and Butch Pau'u play together as linebackers. Yes, Dylan Collie's leadership and experience excites me.

No, I have not prepared stories to post about BYU having an undefeated September and cracking the top 10 in both of the major polls. No, I don't have a W penciled in for the Utah game because the third time has to be the charm for Sitake.

Maybe, June is just too early for some people to rise and shout. Hopefully, during the next two months the other 71 percent can get "the itch" and feel their excitement level rise.

Thank you to everyone who voted. Please vote in this week's poll: Which BYU football  alumnus in the NFL will have the best season this year?
