BYU Football: Did you know? (Coaching Against Alma Mater)

Brigham Young Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall returns to Corvallis, Oregon, for a game against his alma mater Oregon State. BYU football coaches have a long history of coaching against the school they once played for.
Did you know that since 1925 BYU head football coaches have a 28-22-2 record when coaching against their alma maters?
The breakdown is as follows:

Bronco Mendenhall, 2005-Present (Oregon State): 1-0
Gary Crowton, 2001-04 (Colorado State): 2-2
LaVell Edwards, 1972-2000 (Utah State): 21-6
Tom Hudspeth, 1964-71 (Tulsa): 1-0
Hal Mitchell, 1961-63 (UCLA): 0-0
Tally Stevens, 1959-60 (Utah): 0-2
Hall Kopp, 1956-58 (Western Maryland): 0-0
Chick Atkinson, 1949-55 (Idaho/Idaho State): 3-2 (1-2 vs. Idaho, 2-0 vs. Idaho State)
Floyd Millett, 1942 (BYU): N/A
Eddie Kimball, 1937-41, 1946-48 (BYU): N/A
G. Ott Romney, 1928-36 (Utah): 0-8-1
C.J. Hart, 1925-27 (Utah State): 0-2-1

The only head coach not listed is Alvin Twitchell (1922-25). I could not find any reliable information regarding where he attended college. Due to World War II, BYU did not play football from 1943-45.

Clearly, Edwards’ lopsided record against Utah State was the most influential. Interestingly, after seven games, Edwards was just 3-4 against the Aggies.
