That is a ridiculous idea that a little fact checking quickly abolished.

James Dye averaged 20 yards per punt return and returned 4 punts for TDs in his 2 years with the Cougars. I don't think BYU will ever see another punt returner like James Dye. But even besides James Dye, 7 other Cougar punt returners in the past 40 years have averaged more yards per return than falslev has this season.

Acording to CougarStats.com, only 4 players in the past 40 years have averaged more yards per kick return (ypkr) than Falslev did this year: 2008 Austin Collie 27.5 ypkr, 1996 Ronnie Jinkins 27.9 ypkr, 1993 Tyler Andersen 29.9 ypkr, 1988 Erick Mortensen 28.4 ypkr. (CougarStats.com lists Falslev's ypkr at 27.2)

So I think I'll rephrase the statment from my original post. It should read "JD falslev could become one of the best returners in Cougar history."

Gorum the Oldnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021786907272420084.post-3700786953070865912013-01-03T16:41:47.420-05:002013-01-03T16:41:47.420-05:00Great write up.
Just a couple of comments,
1) I ...Great write up.

Just a couple of comments,

1) I disagree about the return game taking a step back. When people returning kicks were not named J.D Falslev, that may have been true, but JD ranks in the top 20% in in yards per return for both kickoffs and Punts.

He is also a marked improvement over last year's returners (including himself). True, he had no TDs, but last year Hoffman, even with his 93 yard TD avereged only 24.4 yards per return (good for 47th in the country). Falslev averaged 26 yards per return this year (good for 24th in the country).

In punt returns, JD falslev's "just 9.5 yards per punt return" is a 66% increase over his 2011 average of 6.1. It is good enough for #26 in the country this year, and last year it would have been good enough for #8.

Because he doesn't have break away speed and he tends to be overlooked, but he could potentially be the best returner BYU has ever had.

For reference, look at Vai Sikahema. Vai averaged 8.8 yards per punt return and 25.1 yards his Sr year. Vai also returned 2 punts for TDs in his career, but J.D already has one and still has his Sr year to go.

Gorum the Oldnoreply@blogger.com
