Four BYU Cougars sign NFL contracts

When the NFL draft ended Saturday night, not a single member of the 2011 Brigham Young Cougars football squad was associated with an NFL team. Later that night, three former Cougars signed free-agent contracts and one more signed a contract on Sunday.

Offensive tackle Matt Reynolds signed a deal with the Carolina Panthers, fellow offensive lineman Terrence Brown with the Miami Dolphins, defensive lineman Hebron Fangupo signed with the Houston Texans, and on Sunday, wide receiver McKay Jacobson signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Poll Results: Does Terrence Brown have a future in the NFL?

Former Brigham Young Cougars offensive lineman Terrence Brown does not have a future in the NFL according to 46% of voters. Another 40% of voters thought Brown does have an NFL future. The remaining 14% of voters were undecided.

I was one of the naysayers.

The Brigham Young Cougars never played Stanford when Andrew Luck, who will soon be the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, was their quarterback. In other years, that has not been the case.

The NFL draft starts Thursday, April 26, 2012, and continues through Saturday. About one dozen players from the 2011 Brigham Young Cougars have hopes of finding a home in the NFL. To help get ready for the draft, BLUE COUGAR FOOTBALL has selected four former Cougars among those most likely to be drafted or signed as free agents and identified three possible landing spots for them.

Poll Results: Do you share Tom Holmoe’s optimism about the 2013 and 2014 schedules?

By a margin of 55% to 45%, Brigham Young Cougars fans voted, “yes” they shared BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe’s optimism about the 2013 and 2014 schedules.

In this case, I fall on the pessimistic side.

BYU Football: Did you know? (200-Yard Receiving Games)

In college football, 100-yards receiving is the benchmark for a good game for players who catch the ball. If a player accumulates 200-yards receiving, then he had a great game.

Flashback: Back-to-Back 1,000 Yard Seasons

Brigham Young Cougars wide receiver Cody Hoffman is looking for his first 1,000 yard receiving season in 2012 after he came up just short last year. Twenty years ago, Eric Drage became the first BYU wide receiver to have back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons.

Poll Results: How important is it for BYU to join the Big XII?

In a split decision, an equal amount of Brigham Young Cougars fans said it was “essential” or “very important” that BYU join the Big XII. Each response received 27% of the vote. There was a second tie vote in this poll as “critical” and “important” both received 17% of the vote. The remaining 12% of fans voted that it was “not important” that BYU join the Big XII.

I will break the tie vote on top and say it is “very important” that BYU join the Big XII.

Brandon Doman and Andy Reid Should Do Lunch

Brigham Young Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall has commented that he and offensive coordinator Brandon Doman have decided to pursue quarterback recruits who are not only good passers, but good runners as well. Now that spring practices have wrapped up, and Doman has a little more time on his hands, a quick trip to Philadelphia for lunch with the Eagles head coach Andy Reid is in order.

Poll Results: How many BYU players will be drafted by the NFL in 2012?

The prevailing opinion of Brigham Young Cougars fans is that two former players will be selected in the upcoming NFL draft. Nearly half of all voters (48%) gave this response. Another 28% of the voters felt that just one former player would be selected. The remaining voters were equally split between being overly optimistic and excessively pessimistic. "Three or more" players and "zero" players each received 12% of the vote.

I will join myself with the crowd and say two.

BYU Spring Football Final Grades

The Brigham Young Cougars have finished spring practices for 2012. Players will take their final exams in the classroom in a few weeks. With everything wrapped up on the field, this professor is ready to hand out some grades for the BYU defense, offense, and coaches this spring.

By a 63% to 37% margin, voters feel the Brigham Young Cougars did have a successful spring.
